Launch Rally

Give Hope to Asylum Seekers

Dear Friend,

We have great pleasure today in launching the Give Hope campaign, a joint initiative of the Synod of New South Wales and the ACT, UnitingCare NSW.ACT and UnitingJustice. This campaign has arisen as we seek opportunities to reconnect and grow cooperation between UnitingCare and the broader Church. There is a strong and proud history within the Uniting Church and its agencies of working for justice and resisting injustice, knowing that as we welcome the stranger we are responding to the image of God in every person.

Through the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), we are taught one of the most important of God’s laws - love your neighbour as yourself. This beautifully crafted story from Jesus helps teaches us how to behave as a neighbour to people, regardless of their nationality, their religion, their background, or whatever condition we find them in.

Understanding the parable empowers us to embrace a language of justice that crosses cultural, religious and ideological divides. It is a language that gives us a shared vocabulary about what it means to be human, and how we might we be accountable to each other for upholding our humanity and building just and peaceful societies.

As beloved children of God, we are called to respect the dignity of each human person, especially those most needing of our welcome, our shelter and our comfort. We encourage you to visit the campaign website www.GiveHope.org.au to learn more about this exciting new initiative. We hope the wide range of materials on this website will encourage you to raise your voice, get involved in your local community and share our Church’s vision for a just Australia.

We also invite you to take a moment to view the Give Hope campaign video “Were You There” www.bit.ly/givehopesong and join us as we unite for asylum seekers.

Grace and peace,
